From January 2000 until January 2008, under specific policies of President George W. Bush, Republicans went on a personal-policy spending spree that rivals any President in history - with the exception of Ronald Reagan. It was as if they were on a mission: 'Quickly run up a massive debt, leave office, blame Democrats, then start hammering the debt as justification for killing social and other unwanted programs'. And maybe they were thinking along those lines; just think back at what they've said and done since Democrat Barack Obama became President in 2008.
To hear the slime gushing from the right, you'd think Republicans had absolutely nothing to do with our debt. If you think they haven't been trying to convey that message, just remember what they've talked about and who they've blamed for the past four years. But also remember this: For six of Bush's eight years Republicans controlled both houses of Congress, yet said or did nothing to curb spending or fix the debt. In short, they're not only a Party of hypocrites, but also a Party of ball-faced liars.
Whether or not it was a planned mission, one thing is certain --- they've damned sure taken advantage of the massive debt, for which they are mightily responsible, to go after government programs they've been trying to kill since inception.
So, for the record, here are 11 15 16 different charts reflecting the deficit and debt buildup under each President over the past 30 years. Even if you've already seen them, it's time to take another look and remember:
