With the arrival of Fox News in 1996, the world of broadcast news changed as we knew it. Fox came on the scene with a single purpose which was to promote conservative politics; not report the news as it materialized. They were successful not only in that endeavor, but in drawing a large percentage of viewing audience. Much like Star Trek's Borg, Fox has assimilated their viewers, changing the way they think, act & speak, and what they believe; another successful endeavor.
For a while, other broadcast news services tried to combat partisan reporting with straight news; but most have given up and joined Fox if only in a more subtle way. In more ways than one, they've realized it is much better for the corporate bottom line.
Although they are more subtle than CNBC and CNN, the evening news networks are following the leader. ABC and CBS have a very quite, almost unnoticeable, way of reporting in favor of conservatism. While NBC is less devious in concealing it, they have yet to catch up with cable news.
In an attempt to rival the overwhelming conservative reporting, a few Liberal and Progressive reporters managed to convince MSNBC - part of NBC - to give them some air time. However, unlike Fox, MSNBC weeds out most over-the-top extremist.
Those of us who seek the truth from our sources and don't get it tend to blame the anchors and reporters. While that blame is generally well deserved, in most cases their words are dictated by what's on the teleprompter; with some ad lib allowed providing they follow policy (which most want to do anyway). What's on the teleprompter is decided by behind-the-scene managers. Therefore, it is they who decide what is reported and how.
The result of all this is that main-stream broadcast news has lost all its credibility for honest, straight-forward reporting --- even with those who are loyal. The faithful know what is reported is mostly tainted, but, whether true or not, they continue to watch and listen because it's what they want to hear. So who do we really blame here?
